Who are we? School of Hospitality Leadership: The School of Hospitality Leadership (SHL) was established as a program in 1987. The school is now the largest hospitality school of its kind in North Carolina, and one of the largest in the Southeastern United States. Enrollment is between 350-400 students. Students can complete the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management either on campus or via distance learning.
The students can concentrate in food and beverage management, lodging management and or meeting and convention management. Our goal is to educate and train our students to be the next generation of leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry. We also, offer a minor in hospitality management, a graduate certificate in hospitality management and or sustainable tourism, and a Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism & Hospitality. Hospitality is a high-growth career with much potential for qualified workers.
Globally, hospitality and tourism continue to experience steady growth. In the United States, travel and tourism is the first, second, or third largest employer in 30 of the 50 states. Hospitality offers great diversity in its career opportunities and is known for promoting skilled workers quickly through the ranks to supervisory and management positions (www.ahlei.org/workforce/). The SHL is well positioned to help meet the demand for the next generation of hospitality and tourism leadership.
State of the School of Hospitality Leadership: The mission of the School of Hospitality Leadership (SHL) program is to offer an outstanding hospitality education through teaching, research, innovation, outreach by delivering relevant experiences and products to students and creating strong ties with alumni and industry partners. It is notable that our faculty utilize a wide variety of engagement projects with businesses, local governments and non-profits.
We at the School of Hospitality Leadership are providing the best in service business education and leadership. We as a school can provide service management, marketing and leadership for the breadth and depth of service industry and beyond. Obviously, our niche is tourism and hospitality with segments that include; lodging, food and beverage, meetings, events and tourism, recreation marketing and management, which include; public and private entities, i.e. man- made attractions, natural attractions and cultural attractions.
